Cape Town - A collision between a Volkswagen kombi microbus and a truck in Manenberg yesterday morning resulted in 15 people, including several schoolchildren, being rushed to hospital.

The incident, which occurred on Klipfontein Road, has prompted an investigation into reckless and negligent driving, according to police spokesperson, Wesley Twigg.

Quinton Leon, spokesperson for the City’s Fire and Rescue Service, confirmed that one fire engine responded to the scene.

“One adult male, nine female minors and five male minors were transported by ambulances to hospital,” Leon said.

Vernon Visagie, chairperson of the Manenberg Community Policing Forum (CPF), disclosed that some of the children involved were on their way to school when the accident occurred. Despite this, the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) stated none of the schools in the Manenberg circuits had reported the accident. A statement from Twigg further clarified that while no visible injuries or fatalities were recorded, the police are investigating.

“Anyone with any information about the incident can contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111,” he urged.

The incident follows a separate crash earlier this week on Kloof Nek Road, Cape Town.

There, a runaway cement truck with failed brakes wreaked havoc by colliding into seventeen vehicles, causing injuries to at least ten people and disrupting the area’s electricity supply.

The incident was captured and widely shared on social media, displaying the moment the truck crashed into a red Kia Picanto and continued to plough through a line of parked cars, ultimately stopping only after hitting a wall.

Both incidents have raised alarms about road safety protocols and the consequences of vehicular negligence in the city.
