I can’t understand the concerns about Artscape’s food offerings. About 25 years ago there was a restaurant on the foyer level that served a full buffet, coffee and cake after the show.

This was fully subsidised by the taxpayer under the banner of Capab (Cape Performing Arts Board).

The government White Paper of the late 1990s ensured that all entities in the building had to be self funded, and those restaurants had to close.

You could not make money from a diner that was only open in the evenings when you had a performance. I think Artscape do a superb job with their snacks and drinks available. Other theatres in Cape Town that have a restaurant often results in the food arriving 10 minutes before the show begins so you have to irritate others by coming late. Better to eat at home.
