Durban — An armed gang is alleged to have tied up and robbed residents in their home in Effingham, in Durban North, on Wednesday morning.
Marshall Security managing director Tyron Powell said that their team members responded to a house robbery in the Effingham area where the victims had been tied up and several valuable items were stolen, including two vehicles which were later recovered.
Powell said that at approximately 11.30am, the Marshall Security Emergency Dispatch was alerted to a house robbery that had occurred in Popatlal Place in Effingham.
“Multiple armed response officers and members of our Special Operations Team immediately responded and upon their arrival, it was established that the homeowners had been tied up and locked inside the house by five suspects armed with firearms and knives,” Powell said.
He said that their teams managed to gain access to the house and free the victims, who were fortunately unharmed during the incident.
He also said that a trauma team was arranged to attend to the victims.
“Upon further investigation, it was established that two vehicles, a black Nissan Almera and a white Hyundai i10 were taken together with various other items of value including cash and jewellery,” Powell said.
He said that with none of the vehicles fitted with a tracking unit, their descriptions were circulated to all Marshall armed response officers and Special Ops Team members to be on the lookout.
“Our members set out to monitor neighbouring areas and an hour after being alerted to the house robbery, the Nissan was found abandoned in KwaMashu K-Section where it was recovered by members of our Special Ops Team together with the assistance of Greenwood Park Trio Crimes Unit. The Hyundai i10 was found approximately half an hour later, also abandoned in KwaMashu K-Section, where the suspects had crashed the vehicle. The cause of this is currently unknown,” Powell said.
He added that the crime scene and both vehicles were handed to Greenwood Park SAPS and Greenwood Park Trio Crimes Unit for further investigation and processing.
Police have been approached for comment.
