Durban — A gardener was caught in the act while trying to break in and steal from his employer's home, recently.
A resident reportedly alerted a private security company about the break-in.
Marshall Security managing director Tyron Powell said: “Marshall Security’s Emergency Dispatch Centre received a tip from a resident stating that there was a house break-in, and replied hastily within five minutes.”
He said multiple armed response officers were dispatched to the residence. As they entered, “they immediately apprehended a suspect who still had electrical tools in his possession”.
He said the suspect had allegedly forced open and broken the glass door before entering and stealing the items.
“The homeowner was contacted and arrived on the scene a short while later. It was later discovered that the suspect was, in fact, the gardener of the owner and was stealing from his boss. The homeowner had no desire to press charges and upon their request, the suspect was released on a warning.”
In a separate incident, two suspects were arrested in a Durban North robbery.
It is alleged that an armed response officer noticed a woman crying in Chelsea Drive. The woman said she was robbed by the two males and that her purse, which had contained her money and bank cards, was stolen. She said both males had fled on foot.
Powell said he was pleased with the response of the armed response officer as he immediately called for back-up.
“Without hesitation, they went in search of the two suspects after being given an accurate description of the suspects by the victim.”
“A short while later, our armed response officer noticed the two suspects walking in Brooklands Crescent where they were immediately apprehended. Upon searching the suspects, the victim’s purse, as well as a knife, was found in their possession.”
He said the Durban North SAPS were contacted and arrived on the scene a short while later. The victim opened a case.
“We encourage the community to please open cases with the SAPS, no matter how small or petty the crime is, even if the suspect is known or not,” said Powell.
KZN provincial police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said Durban North police have arrested two suspects, aged between 19 and 20, for common robbery.
He said the suspects were arrested after they allegedly robbed a woman of her handbag in Northway and Broadway Road in Durban North.
