OPINION - South Africans are well aware of the contributions of leaders like Struggle icons Nelson Mandela and Oliver Tambo, so why is there a need to build statues of them that cost R20 million?

Our leaders should stop wasting taxpayers’ money on statues and instead use it to build schools and hospitals and create projects in these leaders’ names - this would have been a better way to pay homage.

History and pride in our past is important and should be adopted to a certain degree, but to do it at the cost of better lives for the present and future generations is stupid and a criminal waste of our hard-earned money.

It is sad that the eThekwini Municipality has lashed out at those criticising the government for wasting money on the statues. This is taxpayers’ money; people have every right to question where it goes and why it goes where it goes.
