Tucked away in the rural farming community of Merrivale is the Mzansi Zulu Quilt Centre, the inspirational initiative of Elisabeth Baratta and husband, Rick. This non-profit sewing initiative was set up in 2002 to economically empower disadvantaged men and women.
The light and airy showroom is a visual delight, with walls and furniture draped with quilting works of art, bursting with vibrant colours, shapes and designs.
“I wanted to do this because quilting is not only a way of preserving the Zulu culture in this region, it also provides an income,” says Baratta, explaining that all the profits from the sale of the quilts go directly to the quilters.
The quilts are sold locally and at Rotary clubs in the US, UK, Australia and the Netherlands.
Taking a close look at the each piece, there is no doubt that yarns of talent have played a part in creating these bold bedroom décor masterpieces.
“The methods involved are intricate and time-consuming, and to achieve perfection takes many hours of dedicated work,” says Baratta, who trains the quilters and is proud of their high standard of sewing excellence.
“Through the generosity of KwaZulu-Natal quilters, local fabric outlets and grants from the Rotary Foundation, we are able to help with the necessary tools and fabric.”
The quilters have their own sewing machines and work at home making quilt tops that are later completed at the centre.
Baratta unfolds a brilliant white quilt with red and blue Shweshwe patterns.
“The use of this traditional fabric with a modern stitching technique works really well together and makes for an exciting and cheerful cover for any bed,” she says.
Baratta and her team will also construct quilts ordered to specific design and colour requirements. “No quilt has ever been returned, and we guarantee customer satisfaction.”
Baratta believes that within each quilt is a vision, a story, a creation made with energy that will light up a room, bring joy and create comfort.
