Sure, affordable is a very relative term when we're hovering around the half-a-bar mark, but the addition of two four-cylinder models now makes Audi's latest A6 a more feasible option for those not willing or able to stretch beyond that point.
Until now, the range kicked off with the 3.0 TDI at R520 500, with the petrol range only starting at R655 000 for the 3.0T quattro. Now Audi South Africa is expanding the range with a 2.0T FSI at R462 000 and a 2.0 TDI at R478 000, both engines paired with an eight-speed multitronic transmission that channels power to the front wheels.
The 2.0T FSI is a detuned version of the 2-litre turbopetrol engine found in many models across the Audi and VW range. The version in the A6 pushes 132kW and 320Nm and will sprint from 0-100km/h in a claimed 8.3 seconds.
The more economical option is the 2.0 TDI, with an almost entirely redeveloped 1968cc commonrail engine with piezo injectors and a turbocharger with variable turbine geometry. The motor pushes 130kW at 4200rpm and 380Nm between 1750 and 2000rpm.
According to Audi, this diesel will run to 100km/h in 8.7 seconds and reach a top speed of 228km/h, while feather-footed motoring should reap combined cycle fuel consumption of 4.9 litres per 100km - equating to CO2 emissions of 129g/km.
Inside the cabin, these A6 models are kitted with Milano leather seat trim, 'MMI radio plus' with active speakers and pop-up display, Audi Drive Select with efficiency mode and wireless Bluetooth cellphone preparation and voice control.
On the outside, these A6s are distinguished by six-arm, 17-inch alloy wheels and buyers can also opt for various 18” and 19” designs. Prices also include a five-year/100 000km full maintenance plan.
