The long-awaited four-door version of Audi's A3 has hit local shores, and it's sure to prove a popular addition to the range even though they've positioned it at the premium end of the range.
The A3's design has translated into three-box format rather tastefully, with its coupé-like roofline running into a sloping boot and Audi's 'tornado line' side crease flowing into angular, somewhat agro-looking taillights. It sits 9mm lower and 11mm wider than the A3 Sportback, and offers 425 litres worth of boot space.
Prices start at R323 500, which is not a lot less than the base Audi A4 88kW 1.8T S (which you can take home for R329 500) but let's bear in mind that the A3 Sedan only comes in high-spec SE form.
The A3 Sedan's base engine is the familiar 1.4-litre TFSI turbopetrol which produces 92kW in the manual models and 90kW in the S tronic - with 200Nm of twist on command in both versions.
The other turbopetrol option is a 1.8T that's credited with 132kW and 250Nm, while the sole diesel option is a 110kW/350Nm 2-litre TDI. The Sedan is the only A3 model to offer the latter engine as the hatch models limit you choice to a 77kW/250Nm 1.6 TDI.
As mentioned, the standard features list is generous and includes an MMI audio system with slide-out LCD screen, Bluetooth with voice control, dual-zone climate control, multi-function sports steering wheel, sports front seats, Audi Drive Select with Efficiency programme, automatic lights and wipers, sports suspension and 17-inch five-spoke alloy wheels.
After-sales back-up comes in the form of a five-year/100 000km Audi Freeway Plan.
