This is the first release we've had from Toyota showing more than just a small section of the Yaris Hybrid-R Concept, set to headline its display at the upcoming Frankfurt motor show - a display devoted to hybrids past, present and future.
After all, this is the company that ushered in the hybrid culture with the Japan-only first-generation Prius in 1997 and has now delivered more than 5.5-million hybrids worldwide.
The Hybrid-R has been created as a showcase for possible future hybrid development ideas that will offer more performance - and more rewarding driving - than its current bunny-hugger buggies.
HOT HYBRID HATCH
Based on the three-door Yaris the concept has a 1.6-litre GRE (Global Race Engine) developed by Toyota Motorsport, combined with two powerful electric motors to give it 'intelligent' all-wheel drive capability and, reportedly, a combined output in the region of 298kW.
Using the same technology as the TS030 Hybrid race car, energy recovered under braking is stored in a super-capacitor, chosen for its high power-density and quick charge and discharge speeds to provide sporty throttle response.
FUEL-CELL TECHNOLOGY
Toyota will also showcase the latest version of its fuel-cell hybrid drivetrain at Frankfurt, ahead of the market launch of a production car in 2015.
While admitting that clean, affordable hydrogen production is still some way down the line, Toyota considers its energy density and clean emissions (you can drink what comes out of the tailpipe of a hydrogen-powered car - it's pure water vapour) make this the best technology yet to deliver the ultimate zero-emission car, with hydrogen as an ideal, ultra-clean energy source.
