It might look like just another in the recent long line of radical Lexus concept cars, but the RC is actually the real deal.
Boasting similar dimensions to the new IS sedan, the RC is a dedicated two-door coupé that will go head-to-head with the BMW 4 Series and Audi A5. Whether customers will warm to its courageously edgy design is another matter, but one can't accuse it of not being bold.
Up front, the coupé stands apart with the widest and lowest-set interpretation of the Lexus spindle grille, which is flanked by triangular headlights that incorporate LEDs. Two wheel designs will be offered in the form of deeply sculpted 10-spoke 19-inch units and muscular five-spoke 18-inch wheels.
The concept car influence continues in the four-seat cabin, where Lexus made extensive use of contrasting colours, materials and lighting. A unique touch is its lighting package that reflects light upwards rather than down to "envelop the cabin."
V6 VOOMAH
The initial range, set to be unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show later this month, will consist of two versions: the RC 300h that mates a 2.5-litre petrol engine to an electric motor and the RC 350 that gets a 3.5-litre V6.
No power or performance figures have been quoted as yet, but take your cue from the fact that the IS 300h has a system output of 164kW and the IS 350 is good for 228kW and 375Nm. A V8-powered 'F' version is also rumoured to be on the cards for a later stage.
Stay tuned for more information as it becomes available.
