Johannesburg - Mitsubishi is about to expand its footprint in the South African car market quite radically as it gears up for the debut of the Mitsubishi Mirage A-segment hatch in August 2014 - specifically aimed at the budget and youth-focused entry-level market.

The first Mitsubishi supermini to be released locally will arrive as a three-model line-up, each with five doors and a 1.2-litre, DOHC three-cylinder petrol engine mated to a five-speed manual 'box.

Average fuel economy on the combined cycle is quoted as 4.9 litres per 100km, making the Mirage the most fuel-efficient non-hybrid petrol vehicle available in the United States, Mitsubishi also says it's the lightest five-door, five-passenger vehicle on the US market, thanks to extensive weight-saving in the production-engineering process.

The Mirage comes mod cons such as keyless entry as well as safety kit such as dual front airbags and antilock brakes, all backed by the standard Mitsubishi three-year or 100 000km warranty

Full range details and pricing will be announced at launch.
