With nearly 40-million of them sold around the globe over the last 47 years, it would be an understatement of note to suggest that the Toyota Corolla has been something of a hit.
Yet with the exception of some of the earlier twin cam and 20-valve models, the Corolla has never been anything to get remotely excited about.
Now Toyota wants to shatter that perception with the 11th generation, which sports a far more expressive design that they've even described as "stunning." We'll leave you to make up your own mind about the styling, but few will deny that it's a radically improved design.
What you see here is the US-market version and let's bear in mind that there will be a few styling differences between this and the European-spec model that will be landing in South Africa during the first quarter of 2014.
Toyota says this new Corolla "repositions" it within the segment with its new design, upgraded interior styling, premium materials and roominess. It was designed with the aim of remaining attractive to current customers, while simultaneously attracting more youthful buyers.
LONGER, WIDER, LOWER
Roomier than the current model, the new Corolla rides on a wheelbase that's been stretched by 100mm and in keeping with its sportier orientation, it is 16mm wider and 10mm lower.
The interior design centres on a more horizontal design that mimics that of the new Auris and stylists have thrown in some classier materials, including piano black gloss and metallic trim bits. It's said to offer a quieter experience too, thanks to an acoustic glass windscreen and improved insulation.
SEE IT IN OCTOBER
Our contact at TSA can't confirm the local specifications at this stage, although we will find out more when the new Corolla makes its first local appearance at the Johannesburg International Motor Show in October this year.
The US-spec Corolla will be offered with a 1.8-litre VVT-i petrol engine with two power levels (98kW and 104kW), although local models are likely to mirror the Auris in offering a 73kW 1.3-litre and 97kW 1.6-litre.
Our contact tells us that the European model will also be styled a little more conservatively as US versions aim to be "sporty" while European Corollas go for a more "prestige" look.
The Euro Corolla is expected to be unveiled within the next few days so be sure to watch this space.
