Shortly after pulling the covers off the US-market version of the all-new Corolla, the division across the pond has unveiled the European model, which visually resembles the version that will reach South Africa in the first quarter of next year.
While both cars share the same basic shape, interior and chassis, the model for Europe, South Africa and the rest of the world has different front and rear styling that's errs on the more conservative side. Most notable is that the Euro Corolla has less shapely headlights, a larger grille and a slimmer airdam up front, while larger taillights mark it out at the back.
This is because Toyota is attempting to position the Corolla as a "sporty" car in the US, and as more of a "prestige" product in Europe and elsewhere.
ROOMY AND REFINED
Either way, it's certainly going to appeal to its traditional customer base as a more practical and refined sedan. Toyota promises that its all-new interior is "significantly roomier, more sophisticated and generously kitted."
Front occupants will find a lower seating position and an extended range of adjustment, while those in the rear will enjoy a redesigned, and more comfortable, seat bench and extra knee room.
The European and South African divisions are remaining tight-lipped about the mechanicals beneath, so for now we'll have to speculate that the 73kW 1.3-litre and 97kW 1.6-litre VVT-i petrol engines found in the latest Auris are in the running for our Corolla. North American Corollas come with a 1.8-litre engine with output levels of 98kW and 104kW.
South Africans will get their first chance to see the new Corolla in the metal at the Johannesburg International Motor Show in October this year, ahead of it hitting the streets early in 2014.
