The new BMW X3 was launched with a rather limited range of engines, the 20d and 35i, effectively making you choose between a small diesel engine and a big petrol.
Now BMW has plugged those gaps by announcing two new engines for international markets, as well as the addition of an M Sports package option.
On the petrol engine front, those who can't afford the flagship xDrive35i can now choose an xDrive28i, while those who prefer diesel can now opt for the xDrive30d.
Like its four-pot sibling, the new six-cylinder 30d turbodiesel features an all-aluminium crankcase, latest-generation common rail direct injection and a VNT turbocharger. This 3-litre engine develops 190 kW at 4000 rpm and 560Nm between 2000 and 2750rpm. Much improved over the previous X3 3.0d, the 30d is 19 percent more powerful (30kW) and 22% more efficient, According to BMW, it'll fly from zero to 100 km/h in 6.2 seconds, reach a 230km/h top end and when driven carefully on the combined cycle, sip just 6.0 litres per 100km, emitting 159g/km of CO2.
Yet if you can't resist the sporty engine tone and revving characteristics of a BMW straight-six petrol, and can foot the extra fuel bill, the 28i looks to be a very tempting option.
This 3-litre naturally aspirated mill matches the 30d's 190kW power output, albeit at 6600rpm but of course you'll sacrifice quite a bit of twisting force with the petrol engine putting out 310Nm between 2600 and 3000rpm.
BMW's numbers: 6.9 seconds from 0-100km/h, a 230km/h top end and 9.0 l/100km combined fuel consumption, equating to 210g/km.
Standard on all X3 models is an advanced eight-speed automatic transmission and xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive.
2011 BMW X3s will also be available with the M Sports package, which was specially developed by BMW M GmbH to provide a sportier drive.
The M Sports package comprises a range of high-end suspension, aerodynamics and exterior/interior components. These include the M Aerodynamics package, M alloy wheels and racier interior styling features.
