Police officers Constable Steve Segoale, 40, and Reservist Constable Calvin Mphahlele, 42, have appeared in court alongside 52-year-old former police sergeant, Andries Mafalo facing charges of corruption, defeating the ends of justice, and business burglary.

Mafalo was previously attached to the Lebowakgomo police station in Limpopo.

The trio appeared before the Lebowakgomo Magistrate's Court on Monday.

Provincial police spokesperson, Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said Mafalo and Segoale were granted bail of R3,000 each on the charges of corruption and defeating the ends of justice.

In a separate burglary case, Mafalo and the Reservist Constable Mphahlele were remanded in custody until Tuesday for a bail application.

“The arrests occurred on Friday, October 25 and Sunday, October 27 respectively, as part of an ongoing investigation by the anti-corruption unit in Limpopo,” said Ledwaba.

The investigation linked the trio to a series of unlawful activities.

Ledwaba said Mafalo was dismissed from the SA Police Service after being implicated in incidents where he and the two officers allegedly extorted cash from an individual accused of possessing dagga.

“The recent charges involve a burglary case where he and Reservist Constable Mphahlele allegedly broke into a shop owned by a foreign national in May 2023, stealing cash and cigarettes without registering the evidence or opening a case,” said Ledwaba.

He said police investigations are ongoing.

Last week, IOL reported that three Gauteng-based police officers Sergeant Rofhiwa Sethari, 38; Constable Livhuwani Oriel Matundu, 36; and Fulufhelo Jonathan Matodzi, 32, appeared before the Germiston Magistrate’s Court on charges of theft and defeating the ends of justice.

Gauteng spokesperson for the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, also known as the Hawks, Warrant Officer Thatohatsi Mavimbela said trouble started when the three police officers approached a man who was driving around Germiston, and asked for permission to search the vehicle.

The complainant granted the officers permission to search the vehicle.

The incident happened on Monday last week.
