Luke Smith who died following an assault in New Zealand was laid to rest in the Eastern Cape on Saturday.

The 21-year-old died following an assault in Wellington on October 7, 2024.

Luke was the only child of his parents Natasha and Brian. The family had emigrated to Upper Hutt earlier this year.

Smith’s body was repatriated last week, following a fundraising initiative.

His funeral took place at Breidbach Civic Centre in Qonce, formerly known as King William's Town, and he was buried at the Breidbach Cemetery.

“Everything went smoothly. It was a very difficult time for the family but we are thankful that we could lay Luke to rest,” family spokesperson Nicole Sylvester said.

She said his parents were grateful for the ongoing support they have received from everyone.

Smith’s coffin had Manchester United signage, as it was his favourite club. His family wore soccer shirts for the funeral in his honour.

Natasha and Brian are set to return to New Zealand in a few weeks.

A 29-year-old boxer has been charged with manslaughter in connection with Smith’s death.

Siale Siale was released on bail and is expected to appear in the High Court in Wellington in November.

Natasha said they remained hopeful that justice would be served and left everything in God’s hands.
