A 35-year-old man was arrested after drugs with an estimated street value of R70,000 were discovered in his possession on the R328 outside Mossel Bay, in the Western Cape.

South African Police Service (SAPS) Sergeant Christopher Spies said on Monday, October 28, at around 2pm, members were patrolling near Sonskyn Vallei when they observed a individual who seemed suspicious.

“They approached the suspect and ensued with a search during which they found 999 mandrax tablets as well as 61 grams of tik in his possession,” Spies said.

Police confiscated the find and detained the man on charges of drug peddling.

The suspect, who is in police custody, is scheduled to appear in the Mossel Bay Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, October 29, on the aforementioned accusation.

Spies stated that these actions, as well as increased police presence, are part of the continuing Safer Festive Season efforts.

In another drug bust in the province, a foreign national is scheduled to appear before the Parow Magistrate’s Court in Cape Town after being discovered in possession of R1 million worth of mandrax.

The 42-year-old suspect was apprehended on Tuesday morning, October 29.

The Western Cape police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi, stated that officers from the Anti-Economical and Extortion Task Team are committed to eliminate the province’s illegal drug trade.

“A multi-disciplinary team responded to intelligence-driven information and approached a residence in Parow. Upon entering the house, a search ensued which resulted in the recovery of a consignment of drugs with an estimated street value of R1 million,” said Swartbooi.
