Building Bridges Between Colombia and South Africa
From September 16 to 20, 2024, Unisa hosted the Interregional Exchange of Experiences on Traditional Knowledge in collaboration with the Colombian Embassy. This initiative brought together activists, diplomats, scholars, and grassroots organisations to discuss biodiversity protection, climate change adaptation, and social justice.
The dialogue highlighted shared histories and struggles between Afro-Colombians and South Africans, both of whom continue to navigate the legacies of colonialism and slavery. Dr Maureen Tong, Director of Special Projects in the Office of the Principal and Vice-Chancellor, explained that the event created a platform for collaboration and synergy, particularly for communities of African descent in Colombia and South Africa.
Ambassador María del Rosario Mina Rojas underscored the need to address systemic racism and environmental justice globally. “Understanding the intersectionality of these issues is vital,” she said, adding that empowering marginalised communities is key to achieving equality and sustainability.
The event also explored the role of law in protecting traditional knowledge. Prof Mpfariseni Budeli-Nemakonde, Executive Dean of Unisa’s College of Law, emphasized the importance of ethical frameworks to safeguard the rights of indigenous communities. The initiative laid the groundwork for joint efforts to promote environmental justice and sustainable development.
Unisa Shines at BRICS Universities Rectors’ Forum
Unisa further cemented its international presence by participating in the inaugural BRICS Universities Rectors’ Forum, held in Moscow from 17 to 18 October 2024. Acting Vice-Principal for Institutional Development, Prof Solomon Magano, and Acting Executive Director for Institutional Advancement, Prof Boitumelo Senokoane, represented Unisa in this landmark event.
The forum addressed scientific collaboration, academic exchanges, and digital sovereignty among BRICS nations. Unisa showcased its strategic focus on research, teaching, and engaged scholarship through its 10 catalytic niche areas. The university also emphasized its strong partnerships with BRICS+ nations, such as India, Brazil, and China.
These collaborations align with Unisa’s commitment to advancing South-South cooperation and strengthening its global footprint. The forum provided a platform to exchange ideas and foster deeper academic ties, furthering Unisa’s mission of global impact.

Unisa also participated in the Global Sustainable Development Congress (GSDC) 2024, where its delegation showcased initiatives aimed at tackling global challenges. In Europe, Unisa has partnered with the FernUniversität in Hagen, its German counterpart in distance education.
