London - Mick Jagger has become a father for the eighth time at the age of 73.

The veteran rocker’s 29-year-old lover Melanie Hamrick gave birth to a boy in New York on Thursday.

It means the Rolling Stones frontman now has a son younger than his great-grandchild.

Jagger, who has eight children with five women, also has five grandchildren. He became a great-grandfather for the first time in 2014.

The birth comes more than six months after bandmate Ronnie Wood, 69, had twin girls with his 38-year-old wife Sally. Jagger’s publicist Bernard Doherty said the rocker and Miss Hamrick were ‘"delighted" at the birth.

‘"Mick was at the hospital for the arrival. Mother and baby are doing well and we request that the media respect their privacy at this time," he said.

American Miss Hamrick, a ballerina, began a relationship with Jagger following the suicide of fashion designer L’Wren Scott – the singer’s partner of 13 years – in 2014.

She was a guest in Rio de Janeiro and Mexico during the Latin American leg of the Rolling Stones’ recent tour, which culminated in their first ever concert in Cuba. Miss Hamrick is not expected to live in London with Jagger following the birth and will instead stay in the US to be near her family. The pregnancy was expected to end her career in ballet.

Her relationship with Jagger is the latest in a long line of courtships for one of rock’s most notorious womanisers.

During his affair with Italian model Carla Bruni in the Nineties, Jagger reportedly told her he had slept with 4 000 women. That fling was one of many that blighted his 22-year relationship to US model and actress Jerry Hall, 60, who is now married to media mogul Rupert Murdoch.

In her 2010 memoir, Miss Hall wrote: ‘"I had weaned him off drugs, but they had been replaced by sex and he had never had proper treatment.

‘"Even in our early days, my instincts told me he could not help indulging himself with other women, and by the time we had children I’d read about Mick’s dalliances in newspapers."

Jagger’s first high-profile relationship was with fellow musician Marianne Faithfull between 1966 and 1969.

He then began a short-lived romance with US actress Marsha Hunt, 70, and she gave him a daughter Karis, now 45.

The Stones frontman married first wife Bianca in 1971, and they had daughter Jade, now 44. He had already started dating Miss Hall when his divorce from Bianca – now 71 – was finalised in 1978.

They went on to have four children – Lizzy, 32, James, 30, Georgia, 24 and Gabriel, 18. In 1999 an affair with Brazilian model and TV host Luciana Gimenez, 46, produced a seventh child, Lucas, now 17, prompting his split from Miss Hall. Jagger then had a relationship with fashion designer L’Wren Scott from 2001 until her suicide in 2014 but their time together was overshadowed by rumours of his interest in other women.

The family became even bigger in 2014 when Jade’s daughter Assisi gave birth to a baby girl Ezra Key – making Jagger a great-grandfather. Jade has another daughter, Amba, and a son called Ray.

Jagger’s two other grandchildren are Mazie and Zak, from his first child Karis.
