Eskom said it will be implementing power outages in several areas of Soweto, Johannesburg on Wednesday.

The power utility said it will be conducting planned maintenance from 8:30am until 6pm in Dobsonville Extensions 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, and old Dobsonville.

“The interruption in electricity supply is necessary to perform essential maintenance on our distribution power lines,” Eskom said in a statement.

In addition, Eskom said it will also be conducting maintenance in Cosmo City on Thursday which will result in another nine-hour power outage.

The outage will affect residents in Extension 6.

“In the interest of safety, customers are advised to treat all electrical appliances as live during the power supply outage,” said Eskom.

Meanwhile, on Monday, the Minister of Electricity and Energy, Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa said while South Africans have been enjoying 138 days without load shedding, the energy crisis is not over.

He said that government remains “buoyant” when it comes to Eskom’s performance but load shedding is still not a thing of the past.

“I really want to caution that load shedding is not behind us. In the next three weeks or so Eskom will be sharing what the summer outlook is. We are still buoyant about the performance of these generation plants,” he said.

“Having said that, we need to caution against any early declaration to decree load shedding as behind us. We do everything possible to resolve this question but the numbers do indicate that we are within touching distance,” Ramokgopa advised.
