Cape Town – President Jacob Zuma concedes that urgent reviews are needed into the National Health Act as well as Mental Health Act in the wake of the deaths of over 90 mentally ill patients.

Zuma finally began his speech well over an hour after it was meant to start following disruptions caused by the removal of the EFF as well as a walkout but the DA.

In his address President Zuma offered his condolences to the families of the deceased saying he had given instructions that the recommendations of the Health Ombudsman be adhered to.

This follows a report by Professor Malegapuru Makgoba into the deaths of patients at the Life Healthcare Esidimeni.

“I have instructed Minister of Heath to ensure that the recommendations of the Ombudsman are implemented without any reservations,” he says.

“Which include the urgent need to review the National Health Act of 2003 s well as the Mental Health Act of 2002 with the views that certain powers reverts back to the Minister of Health,” he says.

“Once again extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased.

“Government will offer support so that families do not face this burden alone, both the Premier of Gauteng and Minister of Health have given this assertion.”
