The High Court in Pretoria has set aside two days to hear the DA's challenge to government's decision to pay former president Jacob Zuma's legal fees.

In March this year, the opposition party lodged an application with the court in which it asked that the government’s decision to pay the massive legal fees incurred by Zuma be set aside.

In August Zuma’s legal team, which is headed by advocate Mike Hellens, SC, indicated that they would bring an application for a permanent stay of prosecution, but have since abandoned this idea.

The outcome of the DA's application will determine whether the South African public will continue to foot the bill for Zuma's legal costs which are estimated to be around R15 million.

This week's court battle takes place ahead of Zuma’s next court appearance on charges of corruption, money laundering and racketeering in the Pietermaritzburg High Court on November 30.
