There is usually an increase in automated teller machine (ATM) crime around this time of the year. Erik Larsen, a spokesperson for Standard Bank, says people tend to be more relaxed and less on their guard against criminals at ATMs.

The main causes of ATM crime are card swapping and the vandalising of machines. To protect yourself, stay alert and note the following:

- Protect your personal identification number (PIN);

- Only key in your PIN when prompted to do so by the ATM ;

- Keep withdrawals to a minimum;

- Don't accept help from strangers at ATMs; and

- If your card is stolen or retained by an ATM, cancel it immediately.
