Pretoria - As the rain continued to fall across Pretoria, bringing with it cold, wet conditions, low-lying bridges were flooded and the City of Tshwane warned communities to be careful when walking or driving in these dangerous areas.

By the afternoon no major accidents had been reported, even as the rain continued to fall lightly.

“Avoid low-lying bridges,” the City of Tshwane said, adding: “If trapped in a vehicle during in a flood, get out of the vehicle and move to higher ground.”

The metro gave tips for driving in the rain, saying motorists should slow down, turn on your headlights, use windshield wipers, and, if the rain became severe while on the road “find a safe place to park”.

Motorists were also advised not to park near electric power lines, trees, streams and rivers. And to stay clear of metal structures such as fences.

Residents took to social media to complain about the potholes, which they said opened up with every rainy day, asking for urgent work on road surfaces to protect their vehicles.

The City also cautioned people to be careful around heaters, saying heaters should not be put on carpets or close to curtains, couches and other items that could easily be set alight.

Residents were also urged to avoid using electrical heaters in bathrooms or other areas where they may come in contact with water.

And as the cold persisted, Tshwane said: “Never discard hot ashes inside or near the home. Place them in a metal container outside and well away from the house.”
