CAPE TOWN - The design for the Cape Argus cycle jersey was inspired by the “physical and mental strength” of the cyclists who participate in Cape Town Cycle Tour.

Athleisure and sportswear designer Yaasir Jacobs, 35, from University Estate said the “courage of cyclists speaks for itself and needs no elaborate decoration”.

“After several meetings with the Cape Argus team, trying to get a feel for their energy and preferences, it became quite clear that we were on the same page creatively. We both agreed that a classy, clean, minimalistic style would make the boldest statement.

“I designed a few options for them but the one they eventually chose was secretly my favourite,” he said. Partial to a “simpler, fresh” approach to design, Jacobs said he always keeps an eye on global trends and allows his many varied interests to shape his design style, which he adapts to suit briefs from clients for their particular sport.

“This was my very first official cycling kit design and I enjoyed the design journey. My hope is to get actively involved in this industry and extend my efforts to manufacturing of cycling wear which is currently dominated by a few large players,” said Jacobs.

Growing up in Salt River, Jacobs leaned towards graphic design but ended up in IT. After a stint in the industry, Jacobs joined his father’s electrical contracting business.

Always “excited by new challenges and opportunities”, Jacobs said he formed his company YSport in 2013 and since then he has combined his love of sport, technical computer skills and creativity to grow his business in the athleisure and active wear design industry.

Since working on the Cape Argus jersey design, Jacobs, who has never cycled in the tour, said he was inspired to ride the 109km event. The limited edition jersey, which costs R550, commemorates the Cape Argus 160th birthday and the Cycle Tour’s 40th anniversary.

The jersey can be purchased by calling 021 488 4102 or by e-mailing busisiwe.ndayisaba@inl.co.za or at the Cycle tour Expo (stand 157) at Cape Town Stadium.
