It must have been a hark back to the glorious days of Bafana Bafana for those present at the Nuevo Estadio de Malabo in Equatorial Guinea this week for a legends football game.

Two of our golden boys from the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations side, Doctor Khumalo and Mark Fish, were invited to a special match to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the independence of former Spanish colony Equatorial Guinea.

Khumalo and Fish came up against a number of their former adversaries on the African continent – greats such as Pierre Wome, Geremi Njitap, Francois Omam-Biyik, Rigobert Song, Garba Lawal and Daniel Amokachi, as well as former SA-based Malawian star Ernest ‘Chirwali’ Mtawali.

It was the African All Stars against an Equatorial Guinea Legends XI, and the All Stars emerged 3-1 winners on Wednesday, according to Khumalo.

“Honoured to be part of Equatorial Guinea celebrations of it’s 50th independents and to represent Africa at an Exhibition Game for Africa All Stars against Guinea legends. We won 3-1,” Khumalo tweeted.

But ‘16V’ himself was the mastermind of that victory, as he was so many times for Bafana, says Fish. “With two Cameroon legends Oman biyik and Wome...Yes we won 3-1...Doctor stole the show!!”

Perhaps their performances can inspire Bafana Bafana to victory on Saturday against Seychelles in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at the FNB Stadium.

And if they need help, they can just call on the Doctor…
