Joburg - The SAPS have sternly warned domestic workers against strangers posing as municipality workers after bogus workers robbed a house of valuable items in Free State.

On December 21, there was a house robbery in Naudeville, Free State, where some men overpowered the domestic worker, ransacked the house and fled with valuables.

Police spokesperson Captain Stephen Thakeng said on Wednesday at around 11:32 am, a 51-year-old female domestic worker was allegedly busy with house chores when she heard a knock at the gate.

“Upon checking she was confronted by three African males who claimed to be from Matjhabeng Municipality coming to check the water meter reading, as per request of her employer. She allegedly refused to allow them entry, but they insisted until she decided to open the gate for them,” Thakeng said.

“She was overpowered and forced inside the house. Her head was covered with a blanket and she was tied up while lying on the floor.”

The police said the woman managed to untie herself and informed her employer, however, two wrist watches, Gucci perfume, Versace perfume, Gucci ladies perfume and a remote control were stolen.

“The three suspects were wearing blue jeans, blue top overalls, with green reflector jackets and their faces were covered with face masks. A case of house robbery was registered for further investigation,” the spokesperson said.

The police has urged anyone with information that can assist in tracing the suspects to contact Captain Yolanda Hulme of Welkom Serious and Violent Crimes at 082 493 1204 or Crime Stop number 08600 10111.
