The Ergo Company is celebrating a significant milestone as the film "Old Righteous Blues," directed by the acclaimed Muneera Sallies, continues to represent South Africa in the prestigious race for the Best International Feature Film at the 97th Academy Awards.
With the Academy Awards jurors set to announce the shortlisted films on 17 December, excitement is building around this poignant drama that encapsulates the essence of South African culture.
“As South Africa prepares to take the global stage as host of the G20 Summit in 2025, we are proud that our film, 'Old Righteous Blues', received the opportunity to represent the country as the official submission for the Best International Feature Film category at the 97th Academy Awards," Sallies expressed.
“As we welcome world leaders to our shores for the G20 Summit, we are excited to share our unique cultural heritage and creative expression with the world. Arts and culture play a crucial role in promoting social cohesion, economic growth, and international cooperation.”
"Old Righteous Blues" is not just a film; it’s a heartfelt exploration of themes such as identity, love, community, and redemption, set against the backdrop of the hundred-year-old tradition of brass bands in the Robertson and Worcester districts of the Western Cape.
As local bands gather to practice and compete during the harvest of the region’s famed fruits and wines, the film brings to life a vivid tapestry of community spirit and musical heritage.
The film stars a talented ensemble cast, including Aydan Croy from "Suidooster," Joshwin Dyson from "Arendsvlei," Simon Bruinders known for "7de Laan," Meg Saayman from "Arendsvlei," and Kevin Smith, celebrated for his roles in "Backstage" and "Isidingo."
Notably, the project has provided invaluable opportunities for a crew that had not previously led their departments in international productions, showcasing the film industry’s potential in South Africa.
Produced with the support of the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF), KykNet Films, Indigenous Film Distribution, and Ergo Distro International, "Old Righteous Blues" stands as a testament to the burgeoning film industry in South Africa and its capacity to craft stories that resonate both locally and globally.
As the spotlight turns towards the Academy, film enthusiasts and South African supporters alike eagerly await 17 January 2025, when the nominees for Best International Feature Film will be announced, leading up to the grand ceremony on March 2, 2025 at the historic Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
