The People’s Republic of China (PRC) celebrates its 75th anniversary, this is milestone for China and also a moment to reflect on the profound and positive influence the PRC has had on Africa.

Since its establishment in 1949, the PRC has been a beacon of transformation, resilience, and collaboration. Under its leadership, China has emerged as a global powerhouse, fostering deep and mutually beneficial partnerships with the African continent.

From the early days of African liberation movements, the PRC stood in solidarity with African nations fighting for independence. The revolutionary spirit that drove China to break free from imperialism resonated deeply with Africa’s own struggles against colonial rule.

China’s unwavering support for African liberation movements, from Algeria to Angola, and its recognition of African independence during the Cold War, cemented the PRC as a trusted ally in Africa’s pursuit of self-determination.

Beyond political support, the PRC offered tangible assistance in infrastructure development and capacity building, laying the foundation for Africa’s post-colonial progress. These efforts were emblematic of China’s philosophy of non-interference, where co-operation was offered with respect to African sovereignty and priorities.

One of the most transformative impacts of the PRC on Africa has been in the realm of economic co-operation. Over the past few decades, China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), a hallmark project under the PRC’s leadership, has revolutionised Africa’s infrastructure landscape. Roads, bridges, railways, and energy projects have sprung up across the continent, connecting previously isolated regions and sparking economic growth.

For instance, the Mombasa-Nairobi Standard Gauge Railway in Kenya, Ethiopia’s Addis Ababa-Djibouti Railway, and numerous power plants in countries like Zambia and Nigeria, have been co-developed with Chinese expertise and funding. These projects have not only enhanced Africa's connectivity but have also bolstered industrialisation efforts and improved access to energy, key drivers of sustainable development.

The PRC’s commitment to fostering knowledge exchange has been equally critical to Africa’s transformation. Through numerous scholarship programs, China has opened the doors of its universities to African students, creating a new generation of leaders equipped with skills in technology, engineering, and governance.

The Forum on China-Africa Cooperation has consistently championed educational and cultural exchanges, contributing to the empowerment of African youth.

China’s role in advancing technological co-operation, in sectors like telecommunications and clean energy, has helped African countries leapfrog into the digital age. The construction of ICT infrastructure, coupled with China’s provision of affordable technologies, has enhanced communication, e-commerce, and even healthcare in various African nations.

A partnership rooted in respect and equality

The PRC’s philosophy of mutual respect and win-win co-operation has set China’s approach to Africa apart from traditional Western models. Unlike the exploitative frameworks that often characterise foreign relations with Africa, the PRC’s policy emphasises equality and shared growth. This approach has been a refreshing change, allowing African countries to engage in partnerships that are not laced with conditions or political coercion.

China’s insistence on non-interference in domestic affairs has also resonated with African leaders who seek genuine partnerships that empower rather than control. The development model championed by the PRC has enabled African nations to pursue paths that align with their own developmental aspirations while benefiting from China’s experience in poverty alleviation and modernisation.

As the PRC marks 75 years of leadership, the future of China-Africa relations looks even brighter. With the Fourth Industrial Revolution on the horizon, Africa stands to benefit greatly from China’s advancements in artificial intelligence, green technologies, and innovation-driven industries. The PRC’s vision of a shared future, as articulated by President Xi Jinping, continues to emphasise Africa as a critical partner in global governance and sustainable development.

The collaboration between China and Africa, built on decades of trust, shared goals, and respect, serves as a model of South-South co-operation. The PRC’s commitment to solidarity, peace, and development has had a lasting impact on the continent, ensuring that China’s anniversary is not just a celebration of its past achievements but a beacon of hope for Africa’s future.

“Our oppressors, colonisers, and their allies still seek to control our future, define our morals, and decide who we call friends. We may have forgiven, but we will never forget the hands that shackled us – nor those who stood by our side when it was neither easy nor popular to do so.” – Sikho Matiwane
