MICHAEL Jackson fans are in for a treat when the Michael Jackson Black and White tribute opens in Durban this weekend.

The show will run at the Rhumbelow Theatre in Umbilo from December 3 to 5.

Michael Jonathan takes on the role of the late King of Pop.

Jonathan, who is originally from France, moved to South Africa 13 years ago and has been performing as a Michael Jackson tribute artist for 12 years.

“It’s something I’ve always wanted to do, and since I became a professional (artist) in 2007, I decided to take it further,” said Jonathan.

He has a background in performance with a diploma obtained from the State Theatre in Pretoria in 2008. His love for Jackson and passion for dance are what inspired him to recreate Jackson's legendary dance routines.

“I was about three years old when I started learning the Michael Jackson dance moves, and I have been performing his routines for most of my life.”

Jonathan said that he was drawn to Jackson as a performer because of how magical his shows were and how generous he was as a person. He said he spent most of the time rehearsing, and it had become a lifestyle. Billie Jean is his favourite song to perform.

“I love entertaining people and making them happy. The stage is my home.”

Apart from his dance performances and musical skills, Jonathan is recognised for his resemblance to Jackson, which, according to reviews, makes the audience feel like they are at a real MJ performance.

Jonathan said his team made most of the outfits that he wore during performances. He works together with the designer and his wife to come up with outfits that capture the legendary Jackson look. When he is not on stage, Jonathan said he enjoyed spending time with his wife and baby.

“My family and friends are all supportive of my career.”

Jonathan said it was a tough time in the performing arts industry during the Covid-19 pandemic because they have had to cancel many shows.

“It has been a real struggle. There was no work for us artists, and even now, things are very slow.”

He said he looked forward to performing on stage again and hoped that people would continue to show their support for his craft as they had before the pandemic.

“I can't wait to rock Durban at the Rhumbelow Theatre.”

The Michael Jackson Black and White tribute runs from December 3 to 5. Tickets are available at Computicket for R180.
