Johannesburg - In the leafy-green suburb of Parkview in Joburg, Abigail’s B&B has been running for 17 years. It offers a choice of cottages, suites and rooms, all with bathroom en suite. Each unit is individually decorated by the owner, artist Moira MacMurray. Her paintings grace the newly decorated comfortable rooms.
The AA highly recommended B&B is well situated to visit all the local museums, art galleries, Gold Reef City, Constitution Hill, the Origins Centre, Newtown and 44 Stanley, the quirky shopping complex in Mill Park.
The Village, as Parkview is fondly known by locals, is a seven-minute walk away. The shopping there fulfills most needs. The historical suburb, which goes back to 1906, also offers lovely walks.
The Botanical Gardens and Emmerentia Dam are close by, but even closer is Zoo Lake and the Johannesburg Zoo. Occasionally one hears the lions at night!
Moira can give advice on tours of the city, Soweto, Vilikazi Street, where two Nobel Prize winners have lived, Mandela’s House, Wandies and the new Soweto Theatre; also, on what’s on at the myriad of art galleries and theatres.
The bird life at Abigail’s is a joy and a delight and over 30 bird species have been seen in the garden. There is also a pet-friendly cottage, so you don’t have to leave your four-legged friends at home.
Breakfast is served in a nautical-themed dining room, which is filled with memorabilia of various shipping lines, but mainly the Union Castle Line, which the owner travelled on extensively in the 1950s and 1960s.
Members can enjoy three nights weekend accommodation for two, valued at over R3 000, for R2 000, including breakfast. Valid until the end of 2014.
