SAA has warned of a scam being distributed on WhatsApp and Facebook, appearing to come from the airline.

The scam involves individuals claiming to be offering discounted or free flights from SAA, offering a ‘90% discount’ being offered, and payment links are given.

The airline has advised passengers to be cautious and to only book flights through official channels, such as the SAA website or authorised travel agents.

SAA has released a notice on Facebook stating:

“We have been alerted to a WhatsApp and Facebook scam offering discounted tickets on SAA along with payment links. Please be aware that these offers are not associated with our airline. For safety and security, always verify information through our official channels,” the airline said on social media.

The airline has also urged passengers to report any suspicious offers to its customer service team.

Here are some tips to help safeguard yourself from online travel scams:

  • Verify the source: Check the sender's authenticity Before clicking links or sharing personal details. Look for verified accounts, with a blue check on social media profiles.
  • Research: If uncertain about a deal, search online for reviews or reports about the company or offer to ensure it’s legitimate.
  • Use strong, unique passwords: Ensure your online accounts are protected by using strong, distinct passwords, and avoid reusing them across different platforms.
  • Be wary of offers that are too good to be true: If you receive messages offering discounted or free flights, holidays, or special deals.
  • Check the links: Be careful when clicking on links in unexpected messages or emails, as they may direct you to malicious websites to steal your information.
  • Enable two-factor authentication: Add an extra layer of security to your online accounts by enabling two-factor authentication.
  • Report scams: If you come across a scam, report it to the appropriate authorities and the company involved.
