In a strategic move aimed at bolstering its operations and enhancing the competitiveness of South Africa as a premier global tourism destination, South African Tourism (SA Tourism) has announced the appointment of Darryl Erasmus as its new Chief Operations Officer (COO), effective January 7.
This significant leadership change promises to bring a wealth of industry expertise to the organisation.
Erasmus, who returns to SA Tourism after previously serving as Chief Quality Assurance Officer within the Tourism Grading Council business unit, brings extensive experience from the hospitality and tourism sectors.
His background features a strong track record in marketing, sales, and administration through prominent roles with major brands such as Travelport, Protea Hotels, and Intercontinental Hotels, appending robust credibility to his new position.
In his capacity as COO, Erasmus will oversee the Corporate Services functions of SA Tourism, ensuring the seamless operation of various internal business units.
In alignment with his mandate, he will also spearhead efforts to adapt and implement global strategies within South Africa's local context, further augmenting the country's tourism framework.
Expressing optimism regarding his appointment, Nombulelo Guliwe, SA Tourism's Chief Executive Officer (CEO), highlighted that Erasmus's return forms a crucial part of their strategic evolution.
"This appointment will not only strengthen our management structures but will also contribute to driving our strategic objectives forward while improving our destination’s competitiveness," Guliwe stated.
She showed confidence in Erasmus's ability to enhance the organisation's operational excellence and its global influence.
The Federated Hospitality Association of South Africa (FEDHASA) has also welcomed Erasmus’s appointment, recognising it as a pivotal moment for tourism growth in the country.
National Chairperson Rosemary Anderson expressed the association's enthusiasm, noting that Erasmus's extensive experience in both the public and private sectors makes him ideally suited for the pivotal role at SA Tourism.
“As the industry stands poised for growth, this strategic appointment is particularly significant,” Anderson noted.
She is optimistic about collaborating with Erasmus and the SA Tourism team to implement initiatives that will create substantial employment opportunities in tourism across South Africa.
In a reflection of his dedication to the sector, Erasmus expressed his excitement about rejoining an organisation he holds in high esteem.
"I extend my sincere gratitude to the CEO and Board for the opportunity to serve South Africa and the tourism sector at large once again," Erasmus shared.
