Hanover Park residents have expressed anger after a 17-year-old was gunned down while seeing his mom off to work.

The incident occurred in Halman Walk on Wednesday.

According to reports, the teenager was walking his mother to work shortly before 8am when he was shot by unknown suspects.

Shortly after the teen was rushed to a nearby hospital in a private vehicle where he later died.

Police spokesperson, Captain FC van Wyk said officers were called to attend to the matter at the hospital.

“At the hospital police were informed of the death of a 17-year-old male person who succumbed to gunshot wounds to his chest,” he said.

“A murder case was opened for investigation.”

Van Wyk added that the motive behind this shooting incident is not yet known and no arrests had been made as yet.

“It is yet to be determined if it was gang related.”

The area’s Community Policing Forum chairperson Ebrahim Abrahams, said the community was shocked by the incident that claimed an innocent life.

“Even though we still need to establish why he was shot, we condemn (the shooting) because he was an innocent person.”

Abrahams added that residents were frustrated by the ongoing violence.

“We approach the police looking for answers and solutions, we want to work together with them, but we never get answers,” he explained.

Meanwhile, officers attached to the City of Cape Town’s Traffic Services arrested two armed suspects who were accused of targeting pedestrians and students in Colorado Park, Mitchells Plain.

The City’s spokesperson Kevin Jacobs said the officers were flagged down by one of the victims about the incident.

“The officers noticed suspects matching the description. A foot chase ensued. Both suspects were apprehended in Las Vegas Way and discovered to be in possession of various items of presumed stolen property, a prohibited firearm and ammunition, as well as dagga and seven mandrax tablets.”

Jacobs said the two suspects, aged 21 and 24-year-old, was taken into custody and handed over to police at the Lentegeur police station.

“Any person who may have been victim of the criminal activities of this duo in the early hours of this morning should please contact the investigating officer at Lentegeur police station, to ensure these additional charges are added to the case,” he concluded.
